Echo and Sage

I took the dogs ( Echo, Jetta, and Sage ) to a friends property today to get some exercise in the timber. My friend has beagles and lives on land that holds lot’s of wildlife including rabbits. Right from the get go the dogs got on a rabbit. Pretty quickly I heard a noise that didn’t sound good. When I got to the dogs Echo and Sage were playing tug of war with the rabbit. The dogs do occasionally catch a rabbit but it doesn’t happen alot. The day ended up being a good one for the dogs. They trailed numerous rabbits, and also trapped a possum under a log.  I got to hear Sage voice for the first time when trailing a rabbit. Echo and Jetta are experienced and both voice well. I have been keeping Sage off rabbit’s hoping to keep her more focused on deer tracking.  She is young . Towards the end of the run today the dogs did jump a doe deer. We were concerned that there may be a fawn laying near so I hooked the dogs up and headed off. It was getting warm anyhow, and time to go.

Scout

Today I was looking through some old pictures and came across one of my first WHD (Scout). This picture was taken on one of her first recoveries. It shows the character of her when she came to the end of a deer track. I miss Scout a lot, but am comforted by the fact that some of her genetics still remain in my breeding’s.

Dossie Litter

Here are a few updated pictures of a recent litter of Teckel pups whelped in Idaho. The pups have all been spoken for and are headed to their new homes. The owners of the litter are Edd and Leanne Woslum. Edd calls them their ‘wonder pups’. They did a great job with this litter. The pups matured at the same time Idaho was experiencing 27 consecutive days of snow fall (the last I had heard:).  The owners and the litter were snow bound. Good luck to all these future trackers and their new owners!L1020327Scout-Sniper 7 weeks

Update 12-05-16: I was told by Leanne today that all pups are spoken for.

A litter of Wirehaired Dachshunds was recently whelped. There are still pups available. This first time litter for ‘Dossie’ includes 4 male and 4 female pups. Dossie was whelped by us. Dossie is owned by Edd and Leanne Woslum of Idaho. They are friends of mine. They own and run a private hunting ranch. Dossie is a certified and established tracker. The sire of the litter ‘Max’ is out of Oregon. You’ll need to talk to Edd or Leanne for more info on Max’s background. I do believe he is an import from Germany.

A Couple Of Recent Tracks

Sage

My dog Sage got to track a real nice buck yesterday. It was a great track for a young dog. Sage is almost 6 months old. The buck went a total of about 500 yards. There was not much blood for the first 200 yards. After that it got much better in spots. I was happy with Jetta’s tracking and happy for this hunter, who took a trophy buck.

Later the same day I took Jetta out. This was an easy track for her. The problem was me, the handler. When we first arrived at the hit site Jetta was pulling like a freight train and voicing down a deer trail, with no visible blood. The hunter’s were sure the deer had gone a totally different direction. I thought Jetta possibly was pulling towards fresh rabbit scent, as the area is full of cottontails.  After pulling her off that line, and searching the area the deer had supposedly gone, I returned to the hit site. As Jetta started pulling again down the same trail, I went down it a ways to investigate. Not very far in I found blood and then saw the deer laying close by. Good job Jetta! I should have known better.

Hey Brian,
Chui was again the hero. Very long track, down and up 2 deep canyons and 2 formidable mountains.
Cheers,

Vimy

Vimy

Vimy is owned by Scot Davidson. Vimy has been used as the stud dog in our recent breeding’s.  Scot and Vimy have been having a good 2016 tracking season.  Scot wrote that the above deer involved an 18hr. old track that went about 500 yards.

On this buck track

Scot wrote;

Tough track across over 300yrds. of picked beans with no visible blood after 20yrds. Found blood on the other side of the picked beans and the deer in thick brush. Thought it had expired as his head was on the ground but he got up with Vimy attached to his rear. Vimy made easy work of finding the buck 4 more times on the hot trail and the hunter was able to dispatch him.Total of 3/4 mile successful track.
